Visual References

I decided on the theme while searching for infographic posters on Pinterest. The following three posters are about sea creatures. I will use these as references to start making a poster about ”killer whales”.

Sketch

I came up with a design to display information using materials I found and the rules of LATCH. The layout was heavily influenced by an octopus poster. I decided on the general placement of the objects and considered the space for the text when designing.

 Colouring and Drawing

Add colors and objects based on the layout you created.

To make the killer whale habitat map into a globe shape, I drew illustrations of the continents and used the free transform warp to fit them into a circular shape. I added different information and illustrations to each of the three boxes on the bottom left. I used a gradient in the background to express the underwater world.

The main object, the killer whale, was drawn from an actual photograph using the pen tool. A picture showing the hierarchy of the dorsal fin was also cut out from the photograph. When writing the text, a semi-transparent box with rounded corners is placed in the background to make the text easier to see and at the same time reduce interference with the background and objects.

In this production, there were many types of objects even at the layout stage, so filing them made the work more efficient and made it easy to edit when I wanted to change the color or size.

Final Outcome - Infographic Poster
                                       Fig 5.1 Final Outcome
In a limited time, I used the knowledge I gained in class to create my first poster using Photoshop. I feel that my skills are still lacking when compared to the reference materials, but by repeatedly using my ingenuity and researching and trying things I didn't understand, I was finally able to create something. Therefore, I am proud of the work I created.
