 Brief: Task3
In Task 3, I was able to make a Back to the Future poster more powerful by adding my own interpretation without destroying the original image, based on the design principles I learned in Task 1 and new ideas that were born from the analysis in Task 2. I was worried about the ideas in the sketches in Task 2, but I decided to use them all.

My Final Idea

 Explaining design detail

  i) The Decisions
There were three design decisions I made: make it clear that the time machine is a car, connect the flame line to the car, and have lightning come from the time machine.

ii) The Meaning of The Design
Two of these designs were revised because I felt that the contents of the movie and the things depicted in the poster were slightly different. The thing on the left side of the poster is a time machine made by modifying a car called a Delorean, but before the revisions, the poster had no headlights and the frame shape was odd, so I revised it to make it look like a car.(Figure 2.1)

The other is the line of flames. In the film, this is caused by the friction between the tire wheels of the time machine and the asphalt, but if you look at the poster before the correction, the line of flames and the wheels of the time machine are positioned as if they have no relationship. Therefore, we moved the line of flames to the rear of the time machine.(Figure 2.2)
Figure 2.2 Moving the line of Flames

Unlike the two designs above, the use of lightning makes the poster more impressive and clearly conveys that the time machine possesses high levels of energy, giving it a more sci-fi feel. In addition to making a strong impression on the viewer, the depiction of lightning also serves the purpose of filling in the spaces in the sky and shadows, as well as the empty spaces left by removing the flame lines. (Figure 2.3)

iii) The Design Principles

 Emphasis:
The lightning bolts emanating from the time machine were used to emphasize the effect. The lightning bolts made it clear that the time machine had great energy, and the main character's facial expression and pose suggested that he was surprised by the lightning bolts and the time machine that emitted a dazzling light, and was trying to protect himself.

 Barance:
Changing the outline of the car and moving the flame lines had caused the spatial balance of the poster before the revision to be off, particularly in the bottom left corner. So by having the time machine's lightning running across the asphalt, I was able to successfully fill in the space in a balanced way without it looking out of place.

 Harmony & Unity:
The pale lightning connects the time machine to the blue night clouds at the top of the poster. In other words, the lightning can be interpreted as emanating from the time machine, and at the same time, the clouds floating in the sky can also be thought of as being covered in thunder. For this reason, the color of the lightning was matched to the color of the clouds in the blue night sky. This allowed the lightning to harmonize and unify the objects and background of the poster. As a supplementary note, I added headlights to make it clear that the time machine is a car, but I was unsure whether to light the headlights. However, I thought that if I made the headlights bright, it would destroy the sense of unity centered around the light in the center of the poster, so I decided not to light the headlights. My work details

Headlights & Shadow:
I added the headlights and shaded the holes made by cutting out the flame lines.

Moved the line of flame:
I cut out the flame lines, mesh transformed them, and moved them behind the car.

Lightning:
I first drew a rough sketch and decided on the composition of the lightning before painting.

・The body was moved to the center.
・The placement of the flame lines was successful in expressing drifting.
